You've probably seen it on Pinterest or Instagram — those smooth, matte desk accessories and home decor pieces that look like polished stone but feel somehow warmer, lighter, more alive. That material has a name: Jesmonite.
At Kuro Design, every product we make — from our Linea Pen Tray to our Ash Orbit Catchall — is handcrafted from Jesmonite. And almost every customer who holds one for the first time asks the same thing: what exactly is this?
Here is an honest answer.
What is Jesmonite, exactly?
Jesmonite is a water-based composite material. That means it is made by combining two things: a natural gypsum mineral base (similar to the material used in medical plaster casts) and a pure, water-based acrylic liquid.
No petroleum. No harsh solvents. No toxic resins.
The result is a material that looks and feels like polished stone or ceramic — but is significantly lighter, more durable, and far safer to work with. It cures in about 25 minutes, can be pigmented in almost any colour, and can be poured into moulds to create complex shapes that would be extremely difficult to achieve in traditional stone or concrete.
Jesmonite was developed in the UK in the 1980s and is now used by architects, product designers, and artists around the world. In India, it is still relatively new — which is exactly why we think it matters.
Is Jesmonite actually eco-friendly?
This is an important question, and we want to answer it honestly. Jesmonite is not fully biodegradable. What Jesmonite is, however, is genuinely low-impact in a way that most materials used in home decor are not:
- It is solvent-free. Most decorative resins contain chemical solvents that evaporate as toxic fumes. Jesmonite contains none.
- It has no VOCs. VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compound — chemicals that off-gas from synthetic resins, certain paints, and plastics. Jesmonite has a very low VOC rating.
- It is water-based. The liquid component is water-based acrylic, not petroleum-based.
- It lasts. Jesmonite is water-resistant, impact-resistant, and UV-stable. A well-cared-for piece can last years without fading or degrading.
How does Jesmonite compare to other materials?
| Material | Eco-Friendly? | Toxic Fumes? | Durable? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jesmonite | Low-impact | None | High |
| Epoxy resin | Petroleum-based | Yes | High |
| Traditional concrete | Moderate | None | Very high |
| Plastic (ABS/PVC) | Petroleum-based | Yes | Low |
What does Jesmonite feel like?
Jesmonite feels cool to the touch — like running your hand across polished concrete or an unglazed ceramic. It has a smooth, matte surface with a very subtle texture that tells you it was made by hand, not a machine. When you pick it up, it is lighter than you expect for something that looks so solid.
Every piece has tiny, microscopic variations — small air bubbles, slight shifts in pigment, marks left by the mould. We call these the signature of slow design.
How is Jesmonite used at Kuro Design?
At our studio in Gurgaon, every piece starts as a hand-mixed batch. We combine the Jesmonite powder and liquid in precise ratios, add mineral pigments for colour, and pour the mixture into custom moulds — many of which are 3D-printed to achieve the clean geometric forms that define our aesthetic.
After approximately 25 minutes of curing, we demould each piece by hand, inspect it, sand any rough edges, and seal it with a water-resistant coating. Each piece is made to order, which means nothing sits in a warehouse waiting.
How do you care for Jesmonite?
- Wipe with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust or light marks
- Dry it completely after cleaning — do not let water sit on the surface
- Avoid abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, or harsh chemicals
- Keep away from prolonged direct sunlight and heat sources
- Do not submerge in water or put in a dishwasher
